The Exhibition.

The Hardest Thing:
My hardest thing in the Exhibition was cooperating with my group members because we had different ideas but still we always came to an agreement when we put all our ideas together.

The Easiest Thing:
My easiest thing was was to find pictures aand write my oral report. Pictures were easy because on every website there are pictures and visuals and oral report was just putting my information togher in a small speech

The most enjoyable thing:
I have 2 favorite things. One is making the modle of the Orphanage and making the people out of caly and painting it. My second favorite thing was presenting because it was really fun sharing all the information we've learnt with others and I really enjoyed people listening and finding interesting our presentation.

What I would change:
I would change that on the stage there is a big computer board and that we can perform our performances on the stage and with the board if needed (for example I needed it!).

ORPHANS
“All the children in the world cry in one language.”

If you think that you are unhappy, think about children who have no parents. Did you ever think about what children that have no parents feel? We can’t really understand that, only orphans can understand other orphans. When every day we live in a family, have favorite toys, tasty food and a warm bed to sleep in. It becomes habitual and we don’t notice how lucky we are. But, try to imagine, only for one minute, that you do not have a mom or dad or any relatives. How would you live? What would you be?  There are over 143,000,000 orphans in the world today, according to the UNICEF!

An orphan is a child, who is less than 18 years old, and whose parents are dead or the child’s parents are in absence of parental rights because they are in jail, they are in use of alcohol or drugs, they are sick, they treat their child with cruelness or if the parents alone don’t want the child, their child must be taken to an orphanage.

An orphanage is a place where orphans are raised and cared for. But an orphanage can’t really be called a home. These children have a place to live in and food to eat but they don’t have the most important. They don’t have a family and love from parents. These children don’t need a lot of babysitters and teachers: they need only one mother and her love. Very often orphans are separated from their siblings when given to an orphanage or when they are given to foster parents.

In all historical times there were orphans. But the sad thing is that now there are also social orphans. Social orphans are orphans who have live parents. If a mother for any reason doesn’t want her child, for example if her husband left her while she was pregnant or the family has no money to keep the child or if the child is very sick this mother can write an application with the words:  I refuse to take my child. Those are cruelest words.

Only Russia has over 760,000 orphans but only 5% of those children are real orphans. All the others are orphans with live parents.

There are also orphans who don’t live in orphanages. They live in cellars, in attics, manholes or in old and destroyed houses. These children can be seen every day: on the street, at the railroad stations, at the Metro stations, at the supermarket and market, in McDonald’s:  it is them who finish the half-eaten hamburgers and unfinished Coca Cola’s. The number of these children grows every day.

According, to the United Nations organization there about 100 million of these children today. And by the predictions, there will be about 800 million homeless orphans by 2020. Such countries as Bangladesh, Brazil, Colombia, India, Kenya and Nepal are in an especially disturbing situation with homeless orphans.
China has a million orphans in a thousand orphanages across the country.
It is very hard to imagine who will homeless orphans be when they grow up. They don’t go to school, can’t read or write, they don’t have anything. When they grow up they usually become alcoholics or addicts, fill up criminal or even commit suicide. Only a very small part of orphans become real citizens and have a happy family.
Every child has a right for a happy childhood with a colorful merry-go-round in the city park, tasty candy, a balloon, a toy car, a favorite book and to see a funny clown at the circus, have a beautiful dream and a happy home to live in. All this children can get only if they live in a family. So, if any family wants to take a child from an orphanage they can, and that would be the best thing for the child. This process is called adoption. But this process very often is very long (3-4 years) and difficult. It is also very expensive. That is why not very many people adopt and many children are still left in orphanages. But if orphans have relatives and they want to care for the children they can.

These are some organizations that help orphans: UNICEF, Majka i dete, WWO, Orphans International Worldwide, Child's Dream, Dravidians Organization International, Coptic Orphans, United Nations and Resala. These organizations care for these children by placing them in orphanages, foster care, children's homes, care centers, or through adoption.

Orphans also face a variety of challenges: illnesses, abduction, mental problems. Ordinary children who have parents and orphans are quite different but also they are the same because of the most important thing. We are both children. Ordinary children have a home, enough food, clothes, toys and have parents and orphans don't. Orphans are also usually very lonely: they have no parents or sometimes even no relatives. These children are nobody's. They are strangers to everybody. Nobody needs them. According to a visit to an orphanage that I went about a month ago they like the same music, sport and toys as us but they don’t have really big wishes and goals because their whole life is filled with loneliness.

Just imagine what it is like to be an orphan and have no parents. Maybe you think that it is really hard to help orphans, maybe you think that to help them you have to be very rich or grown up but that is not true. To help them you need to have only the kindness of your heart. This is how we, ordinary children, can help orphans: We can visit orphanages to spend time with them, teach them something or be friends with them so they would not be so they will not be so lonely anymore. We can donate toys, books, clothes and other things that they need.

The most important thing that we can do is in the future don’t do this to our kids, don’t leave your own children and always take good care of them.

The character from the book by J.M.Barrie that all of you probably know: Peter Pan said that he did not want to grow up. He said that all grownups are pirates. This is why I want to wish to all of us that when we grow up we will not become pirates, first of all for our own children.

The Exhibition

On Thursday, May 12 it was the Grade 5 Exhibition. First when the first visitors came I was a bit  nervous but more into the day I was much more confident. First, when the teachers said that we will present the WHOLE day I coulden't believe it. But then I saw that it wasn't so hard at all if all the group members were doing what they are supposed to and the audience is listening and interested in what we are  presenting about. during our presentations most of the audience was interested and it went really good. At the night presentations for parents went even better becuase the parents were listening better than the cildren.

Overall, I think this was a great presentations and way to show what we learnt during 10 weeks.

Shadow Plays

Today we watched all the shadow plays. Personally I enjoyed them all but my favourite was Little Red Wolf  becuase it was horribly funny. They also organized themselves very well. Our group, I don't think we organized ourselves well and we fussed. I think I will try my best for the real performance but inorder for every thing to work well everybody needs to do the right thing.
I all I enjoyed watching the shadow plays!!!

11

Mrs.J read a story in class called 11. It is about a girl who had her 11th birthday and she was really happy but her teacher ruined her day by making her wear a red sweater. In this story everybody was so mean to Rachel and full of prejudice.Nobody ever listened to Rachel because they assumed that she was lying. But when she is NOT lying nobody listens to her. Mrs.J read this book to us to NOT be prejudice.

Also we talked about the exhibition. Then after 15 minutes we went to the Reading/Writing table where I explained to my parents what I learned and showed them all my things and I read to them. Then I showed them my portfolio and what I was proud about and what I needed improvement on. Then we talked to Mrs.J about my trimester and Mrs.J said my trimester was wonderful and I deserve an ice cream!
Overall I am happy with the Trimester 2!

Today's Assembly

Today's assembly was by kindergarten and they were learning about the 5 senses and in the MPR there was some smell... and we had to guess what it was and I didn't know what it was but I sure knew I didn't like it. So then they also sang songs, told riddles and showed slide shows. Also Mr. Moynihan told about the card to Mrs.Tracy who left our school. I think this Assembly was great(except for the smell)!!

The 4th Grade Hero Speeches

Today we went to listen to the 4th Grade Hero Speeches which means that exactly 1 year passed from OUR speeches! There were 8 presentations! I liked them all. I think the heroes were pretty much different from last year but still I think they were great! There were 8 speeches that we listened to and most of the people knew their information, researched a lot. You could tell who was prepared. We had to choose 2 best speeches and I did after listening to all. Overall, I think the speeches were all great!!!

What Did I Learn During the 2 Rotations Today???

Today we had 2 rotations on the exhibition. The one my group went to first was the one with Mr.Paul where we made a Google Site on our exhibition topic. My group's was called Orphans and the website is https://sites.google.com/site/challengesandchangesoforphans/. But we didn't put anything on the site yet. I learned how to make a Google Site at this Rotation. Then we worked on answering some question and on Backwards Planning with Mr.Moran. I think I learned a lot about planning and answering questions in depth not just one sentence.

3 Ehixbition Rotations

Today we had 3 exhibition rotations. Our group was BLUE. My groups first station was with Mrs. Suzanne where we went to a site where we can look at others schools Exhibitions. For me that was fun but my computer kept messing around and stopping internet connection and all the other stuff that computers do. The next station that we went to was Mr.Moran's station and there we worked on our central ideas and I thought it was really interesting that different people can think of our central ideas differently or not understand it at all and that is what we revised. Our last station was Mrs.J who had a lesson on listening and we did a fun activity on it. We had some text and we had to highlight what was important to US and then one person tells it and others just try to listen and not say anything. I thought that was really fun!!!
Over all I enjoyed all the rotations!!!

Trimester 2 Reflection

This trimester was successful for me! I am really thankful to all the teachers but especially to Mrs.J for being a wonderful teacher and for teaching me so much interesting things. I really enjoyed this trimester because it was full of new exciting things. I think I spent a great time through this trimester. I think that I also got good grades but also I wish I had higher grades at music and for the next trimester that will be my goal. Also I think I made a lot of achievements this trimester : I got better at math, reading and writing. Something that I especially enjoyed this trimester was book reviews, the exhibition retreat, and experiments.
Overall I think that this was a GREAT trimester!!!

What I Learned This Week

This week was great! I learned a lot of different things!

First I learned about multiplying fractions, whole numbers and fractions, mixed numbers and fractions, mixed numbers and mixed numbers and whole numbers and mixed numbers. Also in reading I finished reading some books and I learned which book I am doing for my book project and aslso in writing I learned about homophones and homonyms and also how to change letters of a word and make a lot of new words. In PYP we learned a lot about our exhibition and who we are in a group with. I think my group is good! Also I learned 6 pages of the Concertino that I play on the violin. Also I learned about my Inquiry question and it was "WHO were the Pirates" so I learned about pirates and who they were and also I presented that!

Overall I think this week was great and I learned a lot!!!

My Inquiry Q

My inquiry question was "Who were the Pirates?". I did this presentation on prezi. It was quite challenging at first but then when I learned how to use prezi it was very easy. I think prezi is a great website to make your presentations on.

I found my information in books and websites for my inquiry question. I had a lot of different questions based on my main question. I tried my best!!!

Today I presented. I went 3rd. I had a pretty long presentation and I think I did well and everybody was interested in it.

Overall I liked my presentation and I will try to always put so much effort in my work.

5th Grade Retreat

First Day
Today we were going for the 5th grade retreat for the 5th grade Exhibition. I was excited! When we got to the Children's Cultural Center Belgrade we were divided into 3 groups and we each had to go to all of the stations 6 of them. We had snack, lunch and recess. The first station we had was Mrs.Tracy's. There we talked about group cooperation and we also played a game called human knot. I enjoyed that station. Then we went to Mrs.J's station there we talked first about our values later about what children in the world face(that is what our exhibition is on). We came up with lots of ideas. I enjoyed this station as well. After that we went to the station where there was 3 Power Points with pictures from different PYP schools around the world and we had to tell what we saw. That was Fun! Then Finally we could get our snack. Then we continued and went to another station. That was Mrs.Suzanne's station. There we brain stormed and looked at the small Q cards Inquiry.  I liked this station! After that we had lunch (pizza) and then recess in the snow. Than we went to another station with Mr.Moran. We talked about topics for the exhibition and about questions on Q cards. Next we went to Mr.Paul who explained where we could find information on the Internet. Then I was quite tired and after that we went back to school.Today was great!
Second Day
Today we did mostly the same as yesterday; stations and it was very fun.But the most I enjoyed playing cooperation games with Mrs.Ivana. We first played a game when we took a hoop and put out our right hand fingers and then we had to lift the hoop up and then we had to sit in each other lap and after that we were divided into teams and we were blindfolded and we had a captain and we had to go through all the obstacles blind folded and with the captains signals but not talking. I enjoyed that and also when Mr.Paul showed us how we could present information at the Exhibition. That was fun and also Mrs.Suzanne's station where we had to reflect on how we feel about the exhibition. That is the 3 things I enjoyed the most. I think I know wich topic I am doing. After these 2 days!
Overall the retreat was great!!!!:)

Experiment and Demonstration

What is an Experiment? An experiment is a scientific test in which you first observe, then ask a question, after that state a hypothesis then test it, report and analyze, and finally report your results and draw conclusions. What is a demonstration? A demonstration is when you show something that is already known. A demonstration does not include a hypothesis.

Similarities: They both show or prove something and they both have an important place in  science.

Differences: An experiment has a hypothesis and a demonstration doesn't, an experiment has variables and an demonstration doesn't. An experiment is a creative process while a demonstration is a verification.Demonstrations are not inquiry base while on the other hand and experiment is.An Experiment requires multiple trials and a demonstration can be done only once.A Demonstration does not follow the scientific method and differently an experiment does.

CON-fidence

The book Mrs.J has been reading to us is called CON-fidence.I really liked this book and it was really interesting. It had good word choice and funny but most important of all it has an important message in it: to always beCONFIDENT. Lauren is the main character and she learned a very good lesson in the story. She cared a lot about what other people think about her which is not important at all. At first she did not make any friends but when she was friends with a mean girl called Celeste she never to realise all the bad things that she had done. Celeste said that Lauren stole the school money but she actually stole it herself so then Lauren had to pay out of her own money. Celeste was a very mean girl and she planned all these bad things to happen only so she would become queen of the popular girls. Lauren was not one of the popular girls but that doesn't matter if you are popular or not. I think that in the end Celeste was put down because she tricked everyone so nobody wanted to be with her and Christa(Who was Lauren's Friend before but betrayed her and became queen of the popular girls) and Rob and Tara became friends with Lauren and I am very happy for Lauren. I really enjoyed listening to this wonderful book.

What Did I Learn Today?

I learned how to compare fractions better at math. I learned how to play a song at music. In class we talked about navigation tools. At Literature Circles when we did out book project I learned how to be creative and unique. Also at my music school I learned Komarowsky Concerto, the Campagnoli etude and the Russian Song.At Solofege we learned what is a barcarole.
Overall, I Learned a lot today!!!

Ice Skating

I am going to a new after school activity: Ice Skating. I never ice skated in my life before I went to this activity. At first the ice was really slippery and bumpy and I was very scared to fall. But then the teacher told us to just try walking and it was much easier. When the activity finished I still wanted to ice skate so then I made my mom take me to the ice skating rink on Saturday. There it was really fun and I learned to ice skate more. Next time at ice skating I knew how to ice skate better and so we went to the other group where the teacher shows us how to do some tricks like turning around, jumping and other hard tricks. Overall it was great!

My Own Experiment!!!

For school we had to come up with our own experiment. First I just thought of an experiment with a magnet so then I decided to experiment if magnet can attract all kinds of metal. So, I took different coins from different kinds of metal: Steel, copper, iron, nickel and gold. My question was will ALL the coins be attracted by the magnet? Then, my hypothesis was that not all the coins will attract to the magnet. After I did my experiment, which was putting the magnet next to each coin and seeing if it will attract, it turned out that my hypothesis was right: not all the coins were attracted to the magnet. The Steel, iron and nickel coins were attracted but the copper and gold were not. I concluded that maybe with a million times bigger magnet you could attract the copper and gold coin because all the objects in the world can be attracted by magnet and one scientist attracted a frog by a very big magnet and he got an award for useless experiments!!! After all I enjoyed making up my experiment and doing it!!!

A frog being attracted by a magnet!!!

The Science Experiments

At school we did two experiments. The first one was coin lab. Fist we had to see how many drops of water can fit on a dry coin. I was in a group with Max and Nikola. We had tweezers and some drop squeezers. We put the drop squeezer in water and filled it. Then we dropped it on a coin. Our hypothesis was that 2, 3 or 5 drops of water but it ended up with being up to 160 in our group!!!Also we tried the same thing with a dry coin.

Another experiment that we did was a paper clip experiment. We tested if a paper clip could float on water. For everybody the paper clip sank, but then we tried to put a paper clip on a paper towel and then removed the paper clip with tweezers without interrupting the paper clip and it floated only once in our group out of 5 tries. The last part of the experiment was tried the same thing as the last one but also putting detergent. All our paper clips sank again!

Over all it was fun! I hope we do more experiments!!!

Zlata's Diary Book Project

                                                             Zlata's Diary

War in itself is disgusting, as it transforms people into beasts and depreciates human life.
                                    -Antoine de Saint Exupery
Warwhat a small word. So much blood, pain and tears are connected to this word. I read little books about war because they are very sad and they are not popular and one of the books that I read about war is Zlata’s Diary which is written by Zlata Filipovic. It has the extraordinary national bestseller award. "Zlata’s Diary" has been published a few times during only one year 1994 and has republished then in English in 1995, 1998, 2004 and 2006. It has been translated into French, German, Spanish, Netherlands, Norwegian, Finnish, Hungarian, Turkish, Chinese and Korean languages. This book’s genre is an autobiography.
The most important characters in this book are: Zlata who is the main character in this book and is a girl who writes in her diary about what has happened and about her joys and worries. Also some other characters in this book are Zlata’s mother and father, Zlata’s best friend Mirna, and all other Zlata’s and Zlata’s parents’ friends.
Zlata is a normal girl who goes to school, takes piano lessons and has many friends. She has lots relatives who visit her and she visits them, she has parents who go to work every day and take care of her and also has a pet canary called Cicko. Zlata writes in her diary about her normal everyday life, when the war begins. Zlata feels very, very sad when her friends and relatives start leaving Sarajevo because they are afraid of war. Now it’s not the same anymore: it’s not safe to walk on the streets, there is no more school and food is very rare to find. When Zlata’s relatives give Zlata and her family an orange it is a very big miracle for Zlata. Zlata writes in her diary about how she feels about war; how she feels when her relatives, neighbors and friends are dead or injured and how it is to not be able to go outside and have no electricity or water. Zlata is very sad when her friend, an 11 year old girl Nina, died in the park from a sudden bomb. She didn’t want to die when she was only 11 years old. She was an innocent girl and was just a child! Zlata does not like the war: it takes away people who she loved. In the war there is the sound of guns firing, the sad news of people dying and the horrible sights of buildings on fire. It does nothing good to anyone or anything. It just kills and destroys. That is how Zlata feels when all this happens. She wrote in her diary: “I keep asking why? What for? Who’s to blame? I ask but there’s no answer. Among my friends, among our friends and in our family there are Serbs, Croats and Muslims... We communicate not with bad, and with the good. And among good, as well as among bad, there are Serbs, Croats and Muslims.” Zlata hates war. She longs for peace. “I want it to stop forever. PEACE! PEACE!” she writes in her diary. Zlata just wants to leave and escape from war-torn Sarajevo but she can’t leave behind her dad. But her summer school teaches decides to publish Zlata’s diary if it is OK with Zlata and it was OK so many photographers and journalists came to Zlata’s house to talk to her. After that the journalists invite Zlata and her parents to France so they decide to go.
I think that the author’s message in this book is that war is horrible and it doesn’t help anyone. The author wants to show that in any moment war could come and destroy love and family or even life. The author also tells and shows how senseless war is and hopes that maybe one day people will learn how to solve their problems in peace.  The theme of this book is war and hope because Zlata always hoped that the war would end.
I think that everyone should read this book to truly understand how it feels to be in a war. When I read this book I had a very sad and scary feeling. But that is still not one thousandth of how people who lived through war felt. Also I think that everyone has to read this book to understand that war is suffering, tears and death and when there is war, children do not get a chance to have a proper childhood. I recommend this book to everyone because we have a peaceful life and we don’t understand how it feels to live during war and that’s why some of us play war games with such easiness. We have to learn how to hate war and exactly books like Zlata’s Diary will help us do that.
I rate this book 10 out of 10 because I hope that when you will be reading this book you will maybe even just a little understand the horrors of war. And then maybe war won’t happen again. And even the word war will maybe disappear from all the dictionaries in the world.

Saint Sava Slava

Today is the 27th of January the Serbian Saint Sava Slava. All the 5th grade Serbian Mother Tounge students invited 5th grade to their presentation and Slava. When we came there there was a big table all set. Then we listened to their presentation. I learned a lot from the presentation. Then they broke the bread and gave it out and then we could eat. There was very much different types of food there. There was bread, cevapcici, salami and many other foods. I was full when it finished. Overall I really, really liked the Sant Sava Slava. Both the presenation and the food were great!!!

Advertising Commercials

I really enjoyed the advertising unit. We made advertising commercials to persuade others to buy their product. First we had to make up a product and  a product name. My group's (Kiki,Alex, Stefan and I) product was a car called Solgott. Next we had to make up a slogan and our was enjoy the ride. Also we had a logo that was a triangle with striped ears and a circle inside with a big S in it. Then we had to tape a commercial. Yesterday, we watched about half of the commercials including ours. All of the commercials were great and we also had to rate the commercials from 5B. But some of the commercials weren't edited well for example too loud music that you couldn't hear the talking at all so other people couldn't know what the commercials were about. I liked all the commercials but some that especially grabbed my attention were Fizzy Rawr because they used a good scene, humor and loads of advertising techniques. Also I liked the Cleanies Soap commercial because they also used humor and they used a famous character from a book I think because they had a robot who wanted to clean himself and they also used snob appeal because they said it was the best soap in the world.
Our commercial was good because you could hear what we were saying and we tried our best. We accomplished a lot because we came up with an ad together and we managed to film our commercial! This unit was fun because we could persuade other people to buy our product and they graded us. We got a lot of EE's ans ME's. In all we did good and this was a fantastic unit!

Visit to McCain Erickson

On Friday 14th 2011 the 5A and 5B classes went to the advertising agency McCain Erickson. There we saw a power point telling us how they work: first they have a client, then a person listens to the client then the person tells some other people what the client said and they think of ideas to make an ad for the clients company and the the creative people draw the ad and write the information in it.They also showed us commercials and ads. It was a really interesting visit to the advertising agency because I have never been there before. But also I wish they showed us around more and not just told us how they make ads but also showed us how they make it for a real company.I had loads of think, wonder but not much see's in our chart. Overall I had a good time but I still wish they would show us more around!!!
